Tiffany Butterfly

Original Tiffany Butterfly
Original Tiffany Butterfly

Pictured above is an original Tiffany Butterfly which was the inspiration for this little project. Tiffany’s hanging butterfly and moth ornaments were hung from the side of lampshades as a decorative addition. Here is a link with some further information https://www.theneustadt.org/collections/collection-catalog?id=67 . Dragonflys were also widely used for these ornaments which were produced circa 1910 and can now command high prices at auctions. Examples here https://www.christies.com/lotfinder/lot/tiffany-studios-a-dragonfly-leaded-glass-and-5154561-details.aspx?from=salesummary&intObjectID=5154561&sid=86e9b97b-aa9b-4469-89b9-624da5f76ee0 . Coming back to my project I thought this would work just as well if it was hung in a window. Where it would enhance the view and also make quite a posh sun catcher.

This was the design I came up with and I would have to say it involved quite a lot of work. There are sixty- nine pieces of glass here and quite fiddly keeping them together while I soldered them into place.

All the glass used here is Uroboros which I thinks works quite well. The body is 00-74 Emerald, Yellow Green and Light Green, the eyes are 00-21 Ruby, Golden Yellow, Red on White, I cut the centers and surrounds from the same sheet. The inner wings are 00-78 Light Green with Spring Green, one of my favorite glasses. Finally the red tips are 60-25-5 Red,Orange and white.

At this point I’m not sure if I will make another as time was a big factor here. It was a good way of using up small pieces of glass though, those pieces that are just to good to throw away. I used a 14 swg tinned copper wire to make the stamens which also serve as hooks from which to hang the chain.

On a sadder note this is only the second post on here this year, due mainly to a number of deaths in my family.Whilst this has been a very sad and difficult time at some point I feel you have to try and move on. Which brings us to this design, the Koi Fish represents good fortune, luck and abundance and everyone could do with some of that.

Youghiogheny Poppies

Youghiogheny Poppies

Poppies are a favorite subject of mine and many other stained glass artists, they just work so well in glass. They are also associated with remembrance in particular for the fallen in two world wars.

This panel is made using Youghiogheny stipple glass, I tried to keep the design fairly simple and let the glass do the work. I have poppies growing wild in my garden and am always struck by the way the red really compliments the green surrounds. For those of you who are interested in reproducing this panel it is now available as a PDF downloadable pattern in the Pattern Store http://www.kennedyoriginalstainedglass.com/?sd_product=poppies-stained-glass-pattern

Blue Hydrangea

Blue Hydrangea

I had always wanted to do a hydrangea panel in stained glass. Some years ago my parents purchased a small property in Ireland with a well established garden containing many varieties of hydrangeas. The sight of the blue flowers up against a white-washed wall was a vision that stayed with me. I had been doing stained glass for a number of years, mostly lampshades which were reproductions. My real ambition though was to do my own designs and hydrangea’s were definitely high on that list.

This panel started as a thumbnail sketch which I did whilst my son was having a half – hour piano lesson. I would often start a project with a small sketch, just to get the initial idea down on paper of how the panel would work. Using the sketch as a guide I could then draft up the full size pattern, in this instance it took about four days to complete.Quite a long time really given my sketch was done in only half an Hour.

The finished panel took another 50+ hours to complete. I have used a Uroboros ring-mottle glass for the mop head blooms a perfect colour I thought. The leaves are all in Youghiogheny Stipple Glass as is the background. I did toy with the idea of using a white but the blue worked much better. I finished the edges in 12 mm zinc came which helps to strengthen the panel.

The full size pattern for this panel is now available as a downloadable PDF file in the Pattern Store http://www.kennedyoriginalstainedglass.com/?sd_product=blue-hydrangea-stained-glass-pattern
