Poppies at Slade.

Poppies at Slade

The story of this panel began a few years ago whilst I was visiting family in the UK. I managed a visit to Kansa Stained Glass where I was fortunate enough to purchase two sheets of Uroboros art glass which is hard enough to find at the best of times. The first sheet I pulled out of the rack was this one, code 10-16-5 Light & dark browns, turquoise with mini fractures. My first thoughts were I loved the colors and it would make a great background glass.

The next sheet I pulled out was this one 60-25-5 Red,orange & white at this point I thought “Poppy panel “. Over the next few years I made a few attempts at a pattern, which for various reasons I had to shelve. However in October 2018 a window of time opened up so I went for it. The colors of the two sheets gave me a feel of Liberty/Art Nouveau which strongly influenced the final design.

Top and Bottom background
Top and Bottom background

I have cut the top and bottom background here. The leaves ( Youghiogheny stipple 4117 Green, ice white & bluish grey ) and the soil ( Uroboros granite backed 65-17 Light & dark browns ). Ready to add the flowers now so hoping I’ve got it right.

Adding the flowers
Adding the flowers

First five flowers here and just really feeling my way. I have an idea in my head but I like to keep everything fluid so am prepared to adjust as I proceed.

More flowers
More flowers

More flowers added now. I have also cut some background glass using the band saw. I am working my way down the sheet of 10-16-5 so I have to be very careful otherwise my vision will be ruined.

Building up the flowers

Top two rows of flowers in and feel like I’m well in control now, just have to bring it home from here.

Filling in the sides
Filling in the sides

Decided to fill in the sides now, trying to link the top and bottom parts together seamlessly. This has more to do with the background glass as the sheet goes lighter from bottom to top.

Closing in the middle
Closing in the middle

Everything seems to be falling into place now. This is not a quick process, slow and steady wins the day, very pleased at this point.

Last three Flowers
Last three Flowers

Background is now completed, just the last few flowers and the seed pods to add.

So here is the completed panel, very happy with the way this has turned out exactly what I was trying to achieve.

I entered this panel into Delphi Glass’s online competition 2019,unfortunately it was unplaced in the large panel category. They did however decide to use it for their annual catalogue cover for 2020 for which I am very grateful. This panel is available for sale, all sensible offers considered.
